PlanetPlugged: How did you first become interested in the drum and bass scene and producing music? Angelzero: Well, I began making music in the early 90's, when my most significant influences ranged from the dark noises of Skinny Puppy to ethereal soundscapes on the Hearts of Space label. I was interested in playing with ambient, experimental tones, textures, and rhythms more for the purpose of relieving my brain of the nagging beats and sounds that constantly plagued me. By luck, in '96 or so I stumbled on "The Hidden Camera" by Photek and it absolutely blew me away, which almost didn't even sound like a genre-fied style of music to me. At about the same time, I began attending parties where I heard different styles of electronic music, on proper sound systems, and I was opened to so many various forms of music that were so wicked, often uncategorizable, and raw and powerful. But very quickly I found that jungle/d'n'b was so much more interesting and innovative than many other 'genres' of dance music. It totally pulled me in. The closest metropolitan area that had a Jungle "scene" was San Francisco, and at the time its scene was pretty small, in dingy lofts or warehouses in dirty corners of the city…I think it all kind of began that way, at least in the states. But I had no interest in the "scene" so much as just the music. I began to incorporate what I liked about d'n'b into my own music. In regard to the d'n'b scene at this point in time, I'm still not really that involved--again, its all about the music for me, and everything else is peripheral to that. Over time, music has simply become an obsession to me…it is something I do because I have to do it. PlanetPlugged: What does the word "success" mean to you? Angelzero: Success means to continue to follow something that I love doing, regardless of anything else. It is not a measure of whether or not I get past the finish line. Life and everything that is contained within it is an ongoing evolution, or change over time. There is no finish line. Page 2 |
